1: About JVDS.com

1.1: Why did you start JVDS?

JVDS was started to offer complete VDS/VPS solutions to anyone who required it. Using both FreeBSD and Linux along with our customization options, we believe that we are the only company that offers some of the best value-for-money products in the market today.

1.2: Where are you going?

We intend to be here for a long time and will continue to build and explore the possibilties of new services and options.

2: Network Services

2.1: How is your network set up?

We use a variety of networks in different locations. Our UK network is powered by Jump.net. Our US network is powered by XO.

2.2: Can I use IRC or setup and IRCD?

TOS has been updated, please read Section 5.2 for more details.

2.3: Can I use nmap to scan my own host?

Sure. However, please be warned that scanning other peoples machines is against our AUP.

3: FreeBSD servers

3.1: How do you setup your FreeBSD VPS's?

We use FreeBSD's built-in jail(8) command.

3.2: Can I have more than 1 IP on the FreeBSD servers?

Unfortunately, not at this time. This is due to a limitation of the jail software we use. There are moves afoot though to have this fixed within the FreeBSD source code itself.

3.3: Why doesn't ping, etc. work?

For security reasons, all ICMP-type traffic with FreeBSD jails are disabled.

3.4: Which FreeBSD install can you setup?

We can install either a base system, a server system, or a java enabled system. Please email support@jvds.com with your request.

3.5: How many servers do you put on each physical machine?

We normally go for around 20 machines per physical host.

4: Linux servers

4.1: What software do you use?

We use User Mode Linux (http://www.usermodelinux.org) to set up the virtual servers.

4.2: Can I have console access?

Yes. We can give you access to the admin console which allows you to change distribution, boot single-user mode, and even access the console.

5: Software

5.1: I want help to install software X

Send an email to support@jvds.com with your questions. We will either provide an answer or point you to an already written solution.

5.2: Can I install IRC?

JVDS does not allow the hosting of IRC, IRC Bots, or eggdrops on our network. Servers found hosting this material will be subject to immediate cancellation without refund. This includes, but is not limited to Servers, Hubs, Routers, Services, Bots, Eggdrop Bots and Bouncers. support@jvds.com.

6: Unmetered Servers

6.1: What bandwidth do you use?

We use XO bandwidth for each machine on an unmetered 10Mb/s port.

6.2: How much can I transfer?

You can theoretically transfer upto 3.2 TB per month if you use the whole line at all times.

6.3: Do you guarantee the line?

You should be able to get 90% of the line 90% of the time.
